Checklist When Moving Out Of Your Rental Home

by Administrator 25. January 2018 07:45

Moving out of a rental house entails certain responsibilities and rights. As a responsible tenant, you should leave the property in best condition possible for the next tenant. You should also avail your right to get back the initial deposit paid to the property owner. Here is a concise checklist to help you stay on top of the game when moving out of a rental accommodation:

• Gather Your Documents - The first thing you should do when you are considering to move out of a rental accommodation is to gather all necessary documents such as tenancy agreement, move-in inventory report, receipts of your rental payments, receipts of repairs and maintenance that you paid for etc. Review these documents and cancel any active subscriptions and services.

• Notice - Every lease agreement contains a clause regarding giving a notice to the property owner before moving out. Take a look at your lease and make sure you give a written notice to the property owner at the right time which is usually 30 days prior to moving out.

• Clear All Your Dues - Re-check your obligations towards the property owner and clear dues if any. This could be in the form of pending rent or maintenance fee.

• Clean-Up - Clean up the house to a point of perfection. Ensure that you do not leave traces of trash or a nasty mess. It is a good idea to hire a cleaning expert for the job. Remove cobwebs, vacuum window treatments, clean the floor, re-paint faded wooden items, get rid of scrapes and scratches on walls, paint them if necessary, wash the insides of kitchen and bathroom cabinets etc.

• Final Inspection - When you are done prepping the house for moving out, schedule a pre-move out inspection with the property owner. Refer to the inspection checklist you received at the time of moving in. Get a copy of the final inspection for yourself.  Leave the keys at management office and don’t forget to get a receipt for same.

• Winding Up - On the moving day, take the readings of gas, electricity and water meters. Photograph them for proof of final readings. Shut gas and water valves, appliances and also the main power switch. Ensure that all the doors and windows are locked. Photograph questionable areas to have proof of their condition when moving out.

• Written Notice - When you are done with all the formalities related to moving out, send a written notice to your property owner requesting for a return of your initial deposit.

• Change Your Address - Intimate your property owner about your new address as that’s the address on which you will receive your security deposit. Get it changed with the post office and other institutions.
